Why concerts happen..
Last night I had the opportunity to go to a concert, thanks to my cousin Yanira. I almost forgot that THAT was on my agenda but my other half reminded me as I went to work in the morning.
His text: ‘don’t you have that concert tonight?’
My text: ‘fuuuuuuuuck!!!’
Truth is I am not a concert-goer. I do not pay ever increasing prices to see ANYONE LIVE. I do not congregate in the dark with other people to LISTEN to music. I do, however do this for movies. I DO pay, reasonable prices, to see a film. I DO congregate in the dark to SEE and HEAR a story and so I can understand when music lovers do the same.
Luis Miguel was the ROCK STAR last night.
He is known in all Spanish speaking countries and it felt as if they were all there, singing along his hits from as far back as the 1980’s.
Young people, married couples, old lovers alike sang the songs that ignited beautiful emotions, tied to unforgettable moments because that is what music does.
I sat and sang along to some songs I remembered and observed.
As I am getting older, I am becoming more of a spectator to what unfolds around me and that was a moment. I felt this energy that ebbed and flowed from the crowd, orchestrated by the musicians, the lights, and the maestro himself, Luis. The crowd went wild when a popular song began, when Luis gyrated his pelvis to the beat of the music, a la Elvis.
How cliche! I thought. Do we still really act like teens when a guy does that on a stage? A dude in his 50’s no less. Have we not evolved past that?!
No, it’s the energy, that contagious energy that can only be experienced in a concert.
Hundreds, thousands of people feeling the same excitement, the same wonderful sensations, positive ones brought on by one persons voice, to me, as a person in the sidelines was beautiful and well worth my Saturday night.
There was a moment when a mariachi band came on stage and began their incomparable melodic sounds, and it’s as if a battle cry unleashed.

The tricolored flag of Mexico unfolded on the screen and the pride was felt, and anyone in the crowd that was NOT Mexican, in that moment as the mariachi played, were.
This is the Mexico the rest of the world should know, the beauty, the pageantry, the music that is undoubtedly theirs not just capitalized imitated versions of their food.
Luis also featured songs that included MJ’s Smile and Old Blue Eyes, ‘Come Fly with Me’.. that was more my style. I loved how he overarched the typical music you would expect, as if to pay homage or maybe even expose the fans to other kinds of genre’s, as if there isn’t a soul on the planet that does not know Michael Jackson or Frank Sinatra but you never know these days.
Last night will remain a beautiful memory. I loved it so, that I had to write about it, not just post about it. The impact was such that I began searching for upcoming concerts that I could enjoy with my partner… Billy Joel?! or as my partner and I like to laugh about how the Irish pronounce it, Billy Jo-Elle!! I know all his songs. I would be one of those fans!
Check Ticketmaster – $1,500 for ONE TICKET! Nah, I’ll stick to movies.
I am sooo happy to know that you truly enjoyed last night…I knew you’d appreciate the experience!! Thank you.
